Beautiful Akumal is located 35 minutes or 37 km (23 miles) south of Playa del Carmen, only 26 km (16 miles) north of Tulum, in the Riviera Maya. And. 100 km (62 miles) south of Cancún. It iss part of Tulum municipality in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico. The 2005 census showed a population of Akumal at 1,198 inhabitants. There is a 4 lane highway that goes from Cancun all the way south to Tulum. There are many highway signs with information, which makes it easy to find most destinations.
The town was officially founded in 1958 as a community for scuba divers by Pablo Bush Romero--a Mexican businessman, diver, writer, historian, and archaeologist. Pablo Bush's family (the Bush/Wolfe family) still owns a large portion of Akumal.
To get to Akumal take the Hwy 307 if you are coming from the north north past Playa del Carmen you will see the entrance on the coast side of the highway, you´ll see a pedestrian bridge and an overpass right at the entrance of Akumal. You will need to continue about 2 blocks past the entrance to Akumal beach, stay in the left lane, take the retourno back north, the main road travels west towards the coastline on your right side. You follow this road until you hit the Akumal arch. Pass through the arch, veer to the left and approximately one block on the right is the *Akumal Dive Shop*. Walk past/around the dive shop and you can see the beautiful beach of Akumal Bay.
Moreover, Akumal Beach houses the non-profit ecological research Center
CEA dedicated to environmental marine research, education, and sea turtle protection. The local hotels, dive shops, independent aquatic tour operators and CEA are working with government authorities to run a bay management program POBAK aimed at protecting the resident juvenile sea turtles and coral species in the Akumal Bay.
Akumal is a true paradise for swimming, *snorkeling*, *diving, fishing,
*relaxing and much more. Akumal is a Mayan word that means "Place of the Turtles", as it has been and still is one of their favorite spot to nest and is the only place in the Riviera Maya that you can *snorkel and see turtles* all year around in the main bay. The fine white sandy beaches at *Akumal Bay* and *Half Moon Bay* are ideal for swimming. Sea turtles can be found in Akumal laying eggs on the beaches at night throughout the nesting season (end of April to October). you can also visit the *Yal-ku Lagoon* in Akumal, It is a spectacular Lagoon fed by a fresh water cenote. It is an ideal place for snorkeling.
Akumal bay is a fantastic diving destination located on the world`s 2^nd largest barrier reef. To top off your diving fantasies we are located in the center of the world`s largest underwater river sytem`s there are more than 50 *cenotes *within a 15 to 20 minute drive from Akumal. You will dive in the clearest water in the world with visibilities in excess of 300 feet underwater. It is truly a lifetime experience.
There is a hotel zone in Akumal featuring all kinds of *accommodation* for every budget from *luxury* *villas* with spectacular ocean view to comfortable *condominiums*, or *hotel rooms *right in front of the Caribbean sea. You can find *Restaurants,* *bars, stores, boutiques* and other *services. *One of the top attractions of Akumal is its crystal clear bay, with its palm trees, allowing you to lay down after swimming in the Caribbean Sea.
